Employment Opportunity: Campus Safety Assistant Director

Description of Position

Northwest Nazarene University’s Office of Student Life is seeking applicants for a full-time (12-month), non-exempt position, as the Campus Safety Assistant Director. The Campus Safety Assistant Director is responsible for the general management, oversight, training, and development of the university security staff. The NNU Campus Safety Assistant Director is part of the Department for Student Life and reports to the Director of Campus Safety & Security.

Essential Functions
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Attempt to provide a safe and secure environment by physically protecting the campus community, the property and rights of all members of the University through patrol methods, crime prevention, through environmental design (CPTED), campus crime prevention audits, campus safety training sessions and orientations, and community policing.
  • Acts as a liaison for the Director of Campus Safety & Security to the campus community, security staff, the community around Northwest Nazarene University, and parents of students
  • Assists the Director of Campus Safety & Security with interviewing and hiring of new personnel
  • Supervises the Campus Safety Staff and their assigned responsibilities
  • Prepares and gives safety staff evaluations
  • ·Responsible for the scheduling of safety staff shifts and scheduling of time off
  • Responsible for covering officer shifts when officers are on vacation or sick
  • Follows up on and investigates campus Clery Act, Contact, Crime, Incident, Alarm, and Lockup reports
  • Approves security staff attendance reports and timesheets
  • Responsible for training and development of safety staff
  • Responsible for managing, distribution and maintenance of uniforms and equipment
  • Responsible for managing department vehicles upkeep, maintenance, registration, and repairs
  • Represent the University by attending monthly meetings and act as a liaison to the Canyon County Idaho Local Emergency Management Council (LEPC) and the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Response (ASPR) Steering Committee.
  • Responsible for Daily Crime and Fire Log documentation
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of safety and security training materials, safety and security procedures, departmental policies, campus crime presentation materials and presentations
  • Responsible for coordinating and overseeing emergency and fire evacuation drills and documentation
  • Responsible for the preparation and overseeing of special conferences and events
  • Assists the Director of Campus Safety & Security with compiling, distributing, and the filing of crime, fire and incident report statistics as required by the University and the Federal Department of Education
  • Responsible for campus traffic control, database imputing of vehicle registration information and distribution of parking permits, maintaining the traffic citation database and sending the semester citation billings to the NNU Business Office, traffic sign installation and replacement
  • Responds to emergency situations
  • Responds to building alarm calls dispatched by the University alarm service
  • Assists with building alarm installations, programming, and maintenance of alarm access codes
  • Provides access to various campus buildings
  • Responsible for instructing campus vehicle safety education and training classes
  • Will supervise, train campus staff, and distribute campus identification key cards, general key card access activation, and troubleshooting of key card equipment and software problems
  • Assist with all OSHA & EPA required training programs (including Hazard Communications, Chemical Hygiene, Bloodborne Pathogens, Workplace Safety, NFP, NIMS, DHS, etc.)
  • Supervise and facilitate institutional Hazard and Safety Awareness programs on campus
  • Assist with environmental protection and industrial hygiene programs, as appropriate, to a campus setting
  • Participate in building and grounds safety programs and safety inspections
  • Participate in and support Campus Safety Committee
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety & Security

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong leadership skills, knowledge and training to perform the essential functions of this position
  • High school diploma
  • Five years of experience in a related field (law enforcement, security services, military, or corrections)
  • All candidates must have a Christian perspective (preferably in the Wesleyan tradition), be in agreement with the doctrine of the Nazarene church, agree to live within the mission and lifestyle values of NNU, and be willing to help advance the spiritual goals of the University
  • High motivation and commitment to the University, including the ability to self-start, be calm under pressure, meet deadlines, work with minimal supervision, tolerate ambiguity, be able to multi-task, be friendly and courteous at all times, and relate to a variety of personalities under diverse circumstances
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written
  • Confidentiality on all issues is expected at all times
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and files
  • Flexibility to work any shift as deemed necessary by University Administration including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime
  • Will be on call and reachable by cellular telephone 24/7 365 days a year
  • Must possess strong computer skills in Microsoft Office products and the ability to learn new computer software
  • Must be comfortable meeting, interacting with, and helping people
  • Ability to respond to campus emergencies as needed
  • Comfortable with instructing in a classroom setting
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Ability to work while standing and/or walking for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds without assistance
  • Must possess strong cognitive skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as the ability to work with others and foster teamwork
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Experience with burglar alarm, card access, and video surveillance systems helpful

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish
  • Knowledge of Clery Act, Hazard Communications, Chemical Hygiene, Workplace Safety, N.F.P.A, NIMS, DHS, OSHA, and EPA regulations
  • Background in science labs and working with chemicals in an educational setting
  • Possess or ability to be certified in CPR and Basic First Aid

Compensation

Salary will be determined by the educational background and experience of each applicant, within a range of $18.00 - $18.90 per hour.
