Northwest Nazarene University is a comprehensive Christian university with a rich tradition in the liberal arts. The university seeks to foster the development of Christian character within the philosophy and framework of genuine scholarship. Furthermore, NNU seeks to serve the sponsoring Church of the Nazarene and the greater Christian community by providing an educated laity and clergy who are loyal to Christ and by educating within the framework of the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition.

Founded in 1913, Northwest Nazarene University is situated in Nampa, Idaho, which sits in the Boise Valley in the southwest portion of Idaho. This locale places residents in close proximity to Boise and the mountains of Idaho with all the cultural and outdoor amenities of the Northwest.

In 1999, Northwest Nazarene College became Northwest Nazarene University. In so doing the institution broadened the reach and scope of its academic offerings, while maintaining a tradition of academic excellence and rigor in its curricular offerings. NNU enjoys a student body of just over 2,000 full time students (approximately 1,300 undergraduates and 700 graduate students). The 88-acre residential campus draws students from 31 different states and 14 countries. The traditional, residential liberal arts population chooses from 41 different majors and enjoys instruction from 107 members of the full-time teaching faculty, 81 of whom hold terminal degrees in their fields of study, teaching within a student/faculty ratio of 17:1. NNU also serves adult learners, offering bachelor’s degrees (in Business, Education, Nursing and Theology & Christian Ministries), masters’ degrees (in Business, Counseling, Education, Nursing, Social Work and Theology & Christian Ministries), and doctoral degrees (in Education). NNU’s instruction modes include traditional face-to-face, as well as hybrid, cohort, and fully on-line delivery.

Of the 40 buildings on campus, of particular note are: the Brandt Center, an iconic campus and community-gathering place that hosts university chapel services, art shows and NNU music events, as well as regular performances by the Boise Philharmonic; and, the Peterson Learning Commons, which was opened in fall 2014 and has quickly become a hub of academic activity, housing the university library, information technology services, eLearning, and the Doceō Center. Additionally, NNU occupied the state-of-the-art Thomas Family Health & Science Center in 2008, which has allowed various STEM programs to flourish. NNU is an NCAA Division II member, competing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, with eight women’s varsity programs and seven men’s varsity programs housed in the Johnson Sports Center and Athletic Field complex. This past year NNU student athletes were awarded the GNAC All-Sports Academic Award for the second consecutive year, recognizing their collective academic work.

The Faculty & Academic Program
The faculty of Northwest Nazarene University constitutes a critical living asset. Across the years NNU has recruited and developed a creative, energetic, committed community of teacher-scholars. The NNU faculty are committed to their role in this teaching university and lead by example, instilling within the student body a commitment to academic excellence.

The heart of the NNU education experience begins in the core curriculum. Here professors introduce a commitment to inquisitive, creative learning. Across the curriculum, teaching and learning is experiential. The NNU faculty teach via hands-on activity in their fields; whether collaborative research with their students in the sciences, ministerial internships in religion, or performance opportunities in the arts, NNU students learn by doing under the modeling, nurturing and challenging of their professors.

The NNU learning experience also seeks to provide intentional opportunities for service in all programs and cross-cultural experiences in the undergraduate programs. All these educational avenues support learning outcomes that serve to engage society with responsive, creative means.

Northwest Nazarene University has a proven level of quality, rigor, and performance in a variety of programmatic offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, enjoying accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, the Council on Social Work Education, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the National Alliance Concurrent Enrollment Programs, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology.

All of this intellectual rigor is coupled with and supported by Christian faculty members. These men and women believe that their disciplines and craft should be taught within the unified truth that is at the heart of this Christ-centered university and its curricular and co-curricular offerings.

Description of Position

Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) seeks a relational academic professional to serve as Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA).  This senior administrator will play a key role in leading the institution toward fulfillment of its mission and vision.  As the university’s chief academic officer, the VPAA will work with the University President, the Faculty, other campus academic leaders, and the President’s Cabinet.
 
The Vice President for Academic Affairs will be expected to be the primary academic leader as NNU seeks to enhance its traditional undergraduate program within a liberal arts context, further develop its adult and graduate offerings, and foster the education of the whole person across the entire curriculum.  The successful candidate will be a committed Christian with an appreciation for the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition and its role and place in the educational experience, and preferably a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
 
The Vice President for Academic Affairs will lead the various academic sectors of the institution in mission fulfillment, maintaining university-wide values and outcomes, while being aware of the uniqueness and importance of each discipline and delivery mode.  Furthermore, the VPAA will be able to cast vision within the context of the university’s vision and mission, set strategic goals, and implement plans to assure mission and vision fulfillment and accomplishment of the goals, all within the context of a collegial, collaborative campus ethos.
 
Essential Functions, Roles and Relationships
The Vice President for Academic Affairs is the university’s chief academic officer and is responsible for the university’s academic programs, personnel and priorities.  The Vice President reports to the President and is a member of the President’s Cabinet.  The VPAA works with the President in overseeing all matters of mission articulation, academic and shared governance, program review, assessment, revision, and new program development, while advocating for and working with the people, programs and priorities in the academic domain.
 
As the chief academic officer, the Vice President for Academic Affairs works with the faculty as a whole, as well as guiding the collaborative work of other academic leaders in their respective areas to foster and promote the NNU academic community.  In addition to administrative oversight, the Vice President is responsible for recruiting, orienting and developing an intellectually talented, spiritually vital and collegially committed faculty who are committed to the university’s vision, mission, and values.  The Vice President will be asked to analyze and review NNU’s academic organization and academic governance, and contribute to the university’s ongoing refinement of shared governance.  The Vice President will also be called upon to work with general and specialized accrediting bodies, harmonizing the institution’s mission and priorities with these programmatic commitments and priorities.
 
The Vice President for Academic Affairs will be called upon to work with the President and President’s Cabinet to provide academic vision, strategic goals and operational plans to move Northwest Nazarene University forward in the scope, quality, nature, and depth of its curricular/programmatic offerings.  All of this must be done with a commitment to intellectual rigor alongside an integrative commitment to the place of faith across the curriculum and across the campus—specifically, the Vice President will uphold the university’s mission and its commitment to the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, and should encourage her faculty and her students to impact the world as positive change agents.

Minimum Qualifications

The VPAA should bring a wealth of personal and professional experience and ability to the position.  The minimum professional and personal qualifications and attributes include:

  • Earned Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in field of study;
  • Committed Christian, with a history of being a committed church member;
  • A history of appropriate scholarship in chosen field;
  • A passion for the role of Christian higher education in the church and society;
  • If not already a member of the Church of the Nazarene, a willingness to join, embrace and actively participate in the Church of the Nazarene;
  • Administrative experience;
  • Personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness;
  • An appreciation for, and model of, servant leadership;
  • A student of higher education with understanding of current trends and movements;
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Vital, energetic, relational, and collegial leader, able to nurture the morale of faculty, students, staff and administrators;
  • An ability to foster a cohesive and comprehensive academic vision for NNU’s traditional and non-traditional undergraduate programs, as well as the university’s masters and doctoral programs;
  • An ability to foster the integration of intellectual rigor with the spiritual dimension, while supporting an institutional commitment to discipline-appropriate scholarship;
  • An ability to work with a variety of internal and external constituencies:  faculty, administrators, trustees, alumni, church, donors, community, accreditors;
  • Commitment to shape and guide the development of a mission-appropriate, pervasively Christian, intellectually prepared, diverse student body;
  • Awareness of and interest in being an informed, global educator and Christian;
  • Foresight and understanding in higher education issues, trends, and best practices;
  • An ability to accept ambiguity;
  • A collaborative change agent;
  • Willing and able to make difficult decisions in a timely matter;
  • Ability to perform the Essential Functions of this position;
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality;
  • Experience with PC software, especially Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to learn new software;
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work;
  • Ability to view a computer screen for extended periods of time; and,
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

The following are additional preferred professional and personal qualifications and attributes that the candidate will benefit from possessing:

  • A current member of the Church of the Nazarene;
  • Extensive administrative experience, including experience in matters of recruiting, hiring, orienting, promotion and tenure;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with ability to execute; and,
  • Demonstrated experience in proactively implementing vision via strategic fiscal management, programmatic/staffing creativity and administrative advocacy.

Compensation

Salary will be determined by the educational background and experience of each applicant.
